The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
by Corin Wentworth

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: When a freak paranormal encounter shatters the lives of a man and his wife, he tries to make sense of what happened. As he searches for answers, he finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into the eerie mystery of the Mothman. Now, strange things are happening in Point Pleasant… What does it all mean? Is it a warning?

REVIEW: The Mothman Prophecies doesn’t get a lot of mentions on many critics’ top-10 movie lists, and that’s always saddened me a little, because I happen to really love this movie. Directed by Mark Pellington — probably best-known for directing music videos for such bands as Pearl Jam, Public Enemy, U2, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, and Anthrax (the list goes on) — the hyper-stylized look of this film is very much like watching a feature-length music video. Visually, it’s stunning. Horror-wise, the scares in this movie are chilling and effective. But, if this quiet movie and all the alien horror it has to offer doesn’t quite do the job for you, this might: The Mothman Prophecies is based on true events.

True, freaky events.

The Gift (2000)

The Gift (2000)
Review by: Corin Wentworth

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A psychic woman is asked to help find a young woman who has disappeared.

REVIEW: I admit I’ve seen my fair share of shitty movies in recent years, and I ain’t even gonna lie, I have enjoyed quite a few of them. But try as I might, I cannot explain why people hated The Gift so fucking much. I have heard nothing but terrible things about this movie. It seems like every person who has mentioned it to me has either (A) emphatically insisted how much it sucks and how much they resent having sat through the whole thing or (B) explained that it is only worth seeing for Katie Holmes’ tits. After watching it, I found myself truly confused. Listen. I know shitty movies. Believe me. But The Gift isn’t a shitty movie. It’s a quality flick! What gives?

Cate Blanchett. Amazing, as usual.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)

X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
Review by: Corin Wentworth

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: When a former priest claims to be receiving psychic visions that might help the FBI find a kidnapped agent, Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate.

REVIEW: A lot of people have been disappointed with this movie, and I can kind of understand why. If you’re expecting the same old FBI ass-kicking guns-blazing aliens-and-UFOs Mulder and Scully, you won’t find them here. Things have changed dramatically in the six years since we last saw them, and the characters we have known and loved for so long have coped with the changes in different ways.

Everything changes. Even Mulder and Scully.
